In the Bible, John chapter 5 verse 6, Jesus asked the man at the pole of Bethesda, Do you want to be healed? I always wondered about that. Who wouldn't want to be healed? But that question was designed to make that man reflect on his own desire and readiness for change. I've encountered the same homeless people where every agency involved can document that they did something.Someone made contact, did an assessment, handed out a brochure, entered the person's name into a database. But then weeks later, person's on the same sidewalk. It's one of the big failures of the homeless system.It rewards activity, not results. Government agencies and nonprofits regularly publish reports filled with impressive numbers. They count outreach visits, meals served, but they don't show that anybody escaped homelessness.
