Human beings have always searched for ways to soften the connection between cause and effect. We deny responsibility, shift blame, rely on luck, invoke status, or seek protection from institutions willing to absorb risk on our behalf. The desire is universal. The methods simply change with time, and somewhere along the way, through a steady accumulation of crises, the expansion of the administrative state, and the weakening of families, civic organizations, churches, and other mediating institutions. Government became the preferred mechanism for managing consequences. Didn't happen all at once. Socialism promises the confiscation of wealth and the redistribution of income.
