Don’t Pass the Buck by Steve Adams

I have some wooded area behind my house and I find it quite relaxing to work on projects there.  It is nice to leave the clutter of work and phones behind for the sights and sounds of the natural world.

Fall is here and I noticed yesterday that the leaves were softly falling as gentle breezes swept through the canopy high above.  I sat on a log and just watched as the squirrels scurried around gathering nuts and an owl screeched and flew from one perch to another.  Close to my seat was a smaller tree with fresh scrape marks indicating that the bucks are shedding their velvet.

As I continued the experience, I noticed a silent stir of the bushes about 30 yards up the 4-wheeler trail.  To my amazement, a young eight pointer stepped out, cocked his head and stood watching me as intently as I was watching him.  He ambled off eventually toward his own destination. It was a moment I wouldn't trade for anything—and a buck I was certainly glad not to pass.
